At Harvard, Professor DeLong teaches MBA and executive education courses focused on managing human capital, organizational behavior and managing talent in professional service firms. Most recently, DeLong has been responsible for the first-year required curriculum for the MBA program and now serves as course head for the required course on Leadership and Organizational Behavior. He has designed an MBA course focused on managing human capital in high performance organizations and an MBA course on strategic issues in professional service firms, taking into account the growth, competitive dynamics, and disintermediation of the business. This was the first course at the Harvard Business School on understanding and leading professional service firms.
DeLong teaches in Harvard's Leadership Best Practices Program as well as in its Leadership in Professional Service Firms Program. He also chairs the senior leadership program for Novartis and chairs the executive course for educational leaders interested in enhancing teaching through participant centered learning. In addition, he has taught in various executive education programs in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
DeLong co-authored the article "Let's Hear It For B Players" in the Harvard Business Review and the book Professional Services: Cases and Texts (McGraw-Hill/Irwin 2003). He has co-authored the book When Professionals Have to Lead: A New Model for High Performance (Harvard Business School Press, 2007) which introduces a new leadership model for professional service firms and a Harvard Business Review article entitled "Why Mentoring Matters in a Hypercompetitive World" (Jan 2008).
Professor DeLong received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in Industrial Supervision. He was also a post-doctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
